Solid oak flooring is very susceptible to moisture related damage. The hygroscopic qualities of wood makes wood plank flooring easily get affected should the plank flooring absorbs too much moisture. As such, part of the maintenance methods done to solid oak flooring are designed to keep it from being exposed to moisture.

Prior to installation of the wood plank flooring, the job site is properly inspected to seek out any sources of moisture and take steps to address it. The sub floor is tested by hydrometers for moisture levels as well as any other possible sources of moisture. The solid oak floors are then acclimatized at the job site for at 48 hours in order to get used to the conditions of the room where it will be installed. It is not ideal to install wood plank flooring in a room with direct access to the bathroom or kitchen as moisture from these areas will easily make its way to the plank flooring nearest the door.

Apart from manually keeping the solid oak floors from any possible sources of moisture, the floors are also finished with a protective coat to further protect the wood plank flooring from the effects of moisture. Finishing is either applied by factory pre finished methods or the on site finish method. Factory prefinished is done as part of the wood plank floor making process. A variety of non water based materials is uses to fully coat the surface of the wood. Job site finish on the other hand is when the protective coating is applied after the installation of the floor. Job site finish can be done on either unfinished flooring or a factory pre finished flooring. The surface area of the floor is usually treated by the floor manufacturer’s recommended finishing product in order to ensure that the finishing process will not produce and adverse effects on the wood surface.
